Dr Lauren Bramley & Partners together with www.vitamind.hk recommend the following when it comes to Vitamin D testing and treatment for persons living in Hong Kong and other polluted cities:
- Never sunburn.
- Take a Vitamin D3 supplement of 2000 IU daily for adults and children over 18 months, and 1000 IU daily for babies 18 months and younger. It is very possible doses higher than these will be required to reach optimal blood levels. Use testing to guide the dose.
- Always use a zinc-based sunscreen to prevent absorption of sunscreen by the body.
- To ensure optimal Vitamin D levels, use sunscreen with an SPF that allows a tan to develop but which prevents sunburn (Choose an SPF of 25 or lower when possible to avoid total block of Vitamin D). You will notice tanning is easier and burning is less likely when vitamin D levels of the body are optimal.
- Have your blood Vitamin D3 level checked every 6 months to ensure optimal levels of 50 - 100 ng/ml.
- Stay informed of the latest recommendations on Vitamin D and your health.
